Fantasy world

THE magistrate who described two teenagers who desecrated Blackburn Cathedral as "scum" is due to find what action will be taken againt him for his remark.

The people who, in their opinion, did not appreciate this remark were the court clerk and other do-gooders. Do they live in a fantasy world? Do they want every criminal to be given a licence to carry on regardless?

In days gone by, people were put in the stocks and pelted with rubbish for their loutish behaviour.

This country needs to start with some proper robust laws put in place to meet the needs of this lawless society.

A.R. JAMES Livingstone Street, Brierfield

Thanks to MP

Our thanks to our new MP Mr Andrew Stephenson.

I met Mr Stephenson to discuss a long ongoing issue over something that happened to me and my wife in our town of Colne.

I raised the same issue with our previous MP Gordon Prentice, but got very little help.

But I can say Andrew Stephenson is far more understanding and interested in resolving the issue that has been hanging over me and my wife for quite some time, causing us a great deal of upset.

I found Mr Stephenson to be very polite and understanding and he listened to everything I had to say on the issue while his secretary took notes, and he promised me he would get to the bottom of the issue that has been making me ill.

I have every faith in him to bring our issues to an end and I can see he will be a great asset to Pendle.

Reality check

AND we all thought it was created for "the good of the nation" - but Lord Greaves's pompous remarks on the negotiatons really ask the question on how they can deliver their part of the bargain when faced with the reality of Government!!

More on taxis

WITH regard to the letter from "Concerned" (Stop Taxis Parking, Letters, May 21st).

I echo those sentiments. The other morning, I witnessed taxis parked in the Boots/Jobcentre area in Colne and, would you believe it, one joining them was driving the wrong way through the no entry section as I was trying to get out (he was trying for a head-on collision, I think!).

It makes me wonder if any of them know how to drive and have roadworthy vehicles.

Grit bin thanks

JUST a few words of thanks for the placing of a grit bin in Oakridge Point.

It makes such a difference to us and we are very appreciative.

So thanks to Mr Jim Marginson and Mr Simon Hook for sorting this out for us.

40 Steps

I WOULD like to express my appreciation to the relevant councillors of Barnoldswick who have been responsible for organising the clean up of 40 Steps.

This area has long been a favourite place for some uneducated dog owners to allow their pets to foul the beautiful cobbled path.

Now the area has been thoroughly cleaned and rejuvenated and is a pleasure to walk on.

So many thanks again to those involved - lets hope the offending dog owners will clean up their act as well so we can all enjoy this historical area for many years to come.

No reply

I HAVE sent several emails and letters to the chairman of BT about the Higham Wind Farm - so far without any response.

So much for public consultation! You would think that for 670,000 a year, they would be able to find somebody who could read and write.

In the absence of any response I intend, as a shareholder, to raise these matters at the BT AGM which this year is to be held at the BT Convention Centre, Liverpool, on July 22nd (11 a.m.). If anybody else would like to join me there to participate or demonstrate, feel free to do so. We would be glad to see you. Other potential victims of BT from other parts of the country may well be there.

In the meantime the BoycotT BT campaign is gathering momentum nationally.

Parking problem

NO one disputes the ACE Centre is an impressive addition to Nelson town centre.

When the plans were submitted to build it, I wrote to the council voicing my concern from bitter experience about the lack of parking in the area and suggested the inclusion of an underground car park.

This was brushed aside as "unnecessary."

Long-stay parking has been a real problem at this end of the town as my customers, staff and visitors to my showroom know to their cost.

Now it seems these problems are affecting the ACE Centre too, so the council has agreed to issue parking permits for visitors to the ACE Centre, allowing them to stay beyond the two-and-a-half hour limit.

May I ask why shoppers are not also afforded this privilege?

If long-stay parking at this end of town is a problem, it is a problem for all businesses in that area. The answer is to provide parking for all, not just a favoured few.

Shoppers are never going to return in volume to Nelson if the council continues to treat them in this way.

Video nasty

Animal Aid has released a shocking new factory farming film featuring grim scenes shot secretly in randomly-selected farms across the UK during the last three years.

Scenes include young pigs looking for sustenance in a trough filled with faeces, and a bin full of dead sheep and lambs.

These images support Animal Aid's argument that modern animal farming presents a significant threat to human health, as well as an intolerable burden upon the animals themselves.

The film is supported by a new booklet called "Is Factory Farming Making You Sick?", produced with the assistance of globally-recognised expert Dr Michael Greger, the Humane Society International's Director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture.

It succinctly describes 12 major diseases that start in factory farm settings but may go on to harm and even kill people.

They include salmonellosis, campylobacter infection, BSE, bird flu and swine flu. Swine flu has killed more than 18,000 people around the world, while in the UK alone, it is estimated salmonella and campylobacter are responsible for around 450,000 cases each year.
