A bitter wind did not keep Nelson Golf Club members from witnessing their new captains’ traditional drive-in at the weekend.

New Captain Ian Brennan was first to drive off, followed by Lady Captain Jean Walker,

Senior Captain Michael Hedge, and last, but not least, Junior Captain Matthew Halstead.

All made very impressive drives with young Matthew beating Ian Brennan by 20 yards!

Meanwhile, Nelson Golf clubʼs outgoing captains were proud to present a local charity with a a cheque for over £4,000 recently.

Men’s Captain Colin Foster, and Lady Captain Lynn Hepworth were on hand at the club to present the cheque to Dan Hill, Area Fundraiser for the Lancashire-based Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

Said captain Colin: “My wife Shirley succumbed to the disease in 2007, and Rosemere were amazing in supporting both Shirley and our family. Not only did they give us the support we needed at the time but they also provide cash for equipment and research on a local basis.”

The start of the season for Nelson’s ladies was blessed by a warm sunny Spring day.

The competition – a 9-hole stableford – saw the Lady Captain’s team beaten by Lady Vice Captain Margaret Pickles’ team by 240 points to 239.

Earlier in the week, Nelson’s Christine Fletcher and Liz Duckworth beat Burnley’s Kath Briggs and Norma Monroe 7 and 6 in the first round of the Daily Mail Foursomes.

The next round will be played in the next month.
