Pendle Forest ended the season with a 1-0 win over Northern win to secure third place in the North Hockey Women’s League Division 2 North West.
The game started fairly evenly, and momentarily saw each defensive line in dissarray, dealing with the pressure until the Northern line cracked and had a player green carded for backchat.
Despite this, they had a couple of skilful individuals up front causing problems and securing a couple of penalty corners, but each one to no avail.
Northern were also playing a very narrow game, so Pendle Forest saw the opportunity to play the ball across midfield, using the width, giving them time on the ball.
There were some great crosses from both sides of the pitch by Sam Parker and Cathy Waters that left the forwards unlucky not to convert.
Some well-delivered play across the top of the circle allowed Olivia Bythell to swipe a crisp shot across the goal, scoring in the bottom left corner, to make it 1-0 at half-time.
Forest held their lead comfortably into the second half, but struggled to break through the Northern goal line.
With only five minutes to go, Northern managed to break and glide past two defenders, with only the keeper to beat, but Laura Kendal came charging out and threw herself down to block the attempt on goal.
Forest survived and deserved their final win of the season, ensuring that they finished in the top three, a point behind Clitheroe in second, and 15 behind champions Kirkby Stephen.
The second team beat Longridge 1-0 to finish second in their league, and are therefore promoted to Lancashire Premier Division.
The third team lost 6-0 and finished fourth in Lancashire Division Two.
