Despite facing horizontal rain and a bitter wind, Nelson’s Gareth Jones and Jack Spiers managed a healthy 45 Stableford points to win the club’s Doubles Qualifier on Saturday.
David Walton and Tim Buckel were second with 43 points, from John Crowder Jnr and W. Collantine in a back nine card play-off.
The first ladies’ medal of the season at Nelson was won by Janet Kelly (90-17-73), one shot ahead of Lynne Grandfield (82-8-74).
There was a three-way card play-off for third between Penny Stanworth, Janet Thompson and Sophie Potter, Penny winning by 0.5 of a shot.
The weekly 9-hole competition also went to a card play-off, won by Elsie Mitton from Margaret Harrison.
Nelson juniors competed for the Kevin Eyre Trophy on Friday at Ilkley Golf Club, won by Jordan Isherwood (93-26-67) from Louis Bancroft (84-16-68) and Josh Kilbride (87-16-71). Best gross was Joe Flannagan’s 79.
On Sunday the juniors played Nelson Lady Captain’s team, winning 192-182.
The best junior scores were from Flannagan and Jordan Isherwood (45 points), ahead of Bancroft and Kilbride (43).
The best ladies’ scorers were Kate Dennis and Pauline Burrows (40 points) and Betty Dixon and Vena Eastwood (38).
Tricky conditions didn’t deter Sue Burgoyne at Colne Golf Club, winning the ladies’ first medal competition of the season with a score of 93-21-72, on a card play-off with Sandra Harris (101-29-72), with Eva Pinder third (95-20-75).
Marsden Park Golf Club held their first team event, with the men’s Texas Scramble won by Robert Baxter, Bob Stanton, Stuart Buckley and Larry Shaw (60-4-56), ahead of Martin Horsfield. Stuart Mulligan, John Atkinson and David Southern (61-4.8-56.2), with Steve Davies, Fran Powell, Gareth Collins and Robert Eastwood third (64-6.4-57.6).
Lady President Pauline Greenwood and Janet Kelly (87-10.6-76.4) won the ladies’ prize with Thomas Nicholson and Charlie Owen (91-14.6-76.4) first in the Junior Section.
