Five Pendle AC athletes have been selected for the English Schools’ Track and Field Championships in Gateshead later this month.
The quintet – Leah Hillman, Matthew Barnes, Tiarnan Crorken, Joe Lonsdale and Kai Atkins – qualified following the Lancashire Championships in May, and the Lancashire Schools’ Championships.
In order to gain selection, each athlete has to achieve a qualifying standard.
The English Schools is seen as a springboard for aspiring athletes, and the vast majority of athletes have all competed at these championships.
Leah will compete in the Inter Girls’ Javelin, Matthew in the Inter Boys’ 3,000m, Tiarnan in the Inter Boys’ 1,500m, Joe in the Inter Boys’ 100m, and Kai in the Junior Boys’ 1500m
The club have a further Pendle athlete, Emerson James, who has also qualified for the English Schools through his West Yorkshire School in the 800m.
In the Lancashire Championships, Kai claimed a middle distance double, with gold in the 800m and 1,500m, and Championship Best and Pendle club record in the 800m, and a Pendle record for 800m.
Joe gained the English Schools’ qualifying time in the 200m with a PB, for gold, and silver in the 100m.
Leah won three golds in the shot, discus and javelin, and a silver in the Hammer – also gaining Championship Best performances in the shot and javelin.
Matthew won the U17 Men’s 3,000m, and there was a silver medal for Tiarnan in the U17 Men’s 1,500m.
Meanwhile, the Lancashire Schools’ Athletic Championships took part at Robin Park, Wigan, with 17 Pendle AC Athletes taking part for their schools. Between them they amassed eight personal bests, seven County Standards and three English Schools’ Standards, an amazing feat for a small club.
