Colne cyclist picked for Olympics

COLNE cycling star Steven Burke is on his way to the Olympic Games in China next month!

The 20-year-old, a former pupil at Park Primary and High Schools, Colne and Nelson and Colne College, was included in the Great Britain team announced on Tuesday.

Steven, currently at a training camp preparing for the Games, is a member of the team pursuit squad which is one of the favourites for a medal.

Steven is the son of Alvin and Sharon Burke, of Temple Street, Colne, who said: "We are really over the moon and we have had to pinch ourselves that it is really happening. He has worked very hard to reach where he is and we are delighted for him."

And president of UK Cycling, Pendle Council's Brian Cookson said: "Steven has done really well to come so far in such a short space of time.Three or four years ago, he was a promising youngster and now he is a member of one of the strongest squads in the world, ready to compete at the highest level. It is quite an achievement and a feather in the cap for Colne and for Pendle."

Steven has already won medals with the national cycling team and was a member of the British squad that performed well in the world championships in Manchester in March.
