Epic struggles on Burwain Lake!

STRONG winds hit Burwain Lake this weekend, testing boats and sailors’ nerves to the limit.

Despite the rough conditions, six boats started the Sunday race, and their epic struggles were recorded on camera by Paul Hargreaves.

Thankfully the only damage to men and machines was a hole in Tom Blackburn’s Laser (pictured) which sailed off on its own into an oncoming boat, having deposited it’s helmsman in the water.

An award is made at the annual prizegiving for the most dramatic capsize and all who sailed must be strong contenders!

It is hoped that conditions will be a little kinder when the club holds its open day on June 9th.

Visitors will be invited to try a sail around the lake and can find out about how to get started in sailing.

The club is also celebrating a successful bid for funding to Sport England for the purchase of three Laser Pico dinghies, which will be used to train adults and children to sail, and be available for non boat-owning members to hire for a small fee.

The grant will also fund the purchase of an additional rescue boat, allowing more boats and trainees to be on the water at the same time.
