THE Golden Cue has a new sponsor for 2013.

The popular local snooker tournament has been backed by John Smith’s Brewery and Ighten Leigh Social Club, and this year’s competition will be known as the Foster’s Golden Cue.

This year’s event will run as two separate competitions, with a large table and small table section.

Players may only enter either large or small table, not both.

The winner of each competition will then meet in a grand final to be held at Ighten Leigh Social Club later in the year.

The tournament open to all amateurs in the Burnley and Pendle, and Skipton Leagues.

Last year, Padiham Snooker Club’s Farakh Ajaib held onto his title with a 4-2 victory over Peter Mercer in the final at Ighten Leigh, claiming the £600 on offer to the winner, with Mercer walking away with £250 as runner-up.

The match was a two-table affair as Mercer entered on the 3/4 table of Low Moor, and Farakh on the large.

Mercer got off to real flyer with a 54 break from his first visit in frame one, but only a missed yellow from Farakh allowed Mercer to go 1-0 up.

He carried on much the same in frame two on the large table with a solid 33 enough to take the frame and a somewhat surprising 2-0 lead.

But Farakh was not about to go down without a fight, and after a potting display over the next four frames knocked in breaks of 64, 46, 49 and 38 to regain the title he won in 2011.

To try and knock Farakh off his perch, the entry form is printed, right, and the closing date for entries is Friday, February 22nd.
