What the media have had to say ...

THEN there's the young medal-winning cyclist Steven Burke, the lad from Colne, a Lancastrian town where you're considered posh if you ask for a knife and fork to eat your pie.

- Daily Mirror

STEVEN Burke took an unexpected bronze after beating Alexei Markov with a polished display in the pursuit. The 20-year-old rider from Corby had only entered the event to get experience for London 2012.

AT the velodrome, Bradley Wiggins, 28, became the first man to win two gold medals in the 4,000m individual pursuit after winning yesterday and in Athens. Teammate Steven Burke, 20, landed a surprise bronze in the same event.

THE cyclists are GB's Invincibles. Chris Hoy's power in the sprint is violence on a saddle. Bradley Wiggins is the lean destroyer. And there are youngsters zooming through to keep the wheels spinning: Steven Burke (bronze) and Ross Edgar (silver) both catch the eye.

STEVEN Burke made it a gold-bronze double for Britain after he picked up his speed in the final rounds of the bronze medal match to edge out Russian Alexei Markov.

- The Independent

ALMOST as pleasing to the team was the bronze in the individual pursuit for Steven Burke, a 20-year-old rider from Corby who was entered in the event mainly to gather experience for London 2012. After posting the fifth fastest time in the qualifying round, Burke went two places better in the next round and found himself in the race for third place against Alexei Markov of Russia. Fractionally behind at half-distance, Burke kept resolutely to his schedule and gradually recovered the time to win by just over three seconds. Whenever Wiggins is prepared to anoint an heir, Burke will be ready for the role.

- The Guardian

TWO months ago, Steven Burke was such an outsider he was not expecting to go to Beijing, but on Saturday he won bronze in the individual pursuit.

- Times Online

WIGGINS even managed to ride within himself in the final to still win by nearly three seconds, and in the same event Steven Burke took a surprise bronze.
