Tributes have flooded in after the death of a retired Pendle teacher following a short battle with lung cancer.

Liz Jackson (65) died at home in Kelbrook on April 11th.

She was diagnosed with terminal cancer in February after being taken to Airedale Hospital, and then St James’s Hospital, Leeds, but was allowed to spend the final weeks of her life at her home of 38 years.

Mrs Jackson was born in York and lived in Bradford and Poynton before meeting her husband, Mike, at Bretton Hall College in West Yorkshire during teacher training.

They married in Poynton in 1970, and lived in Waidshouse Road, Nelson, for four years before moving to Kelbrook in 1974.

Her passions were English and drama, and after moving to Pendle, Mrs Jackson began teaching both at Primet High School, Colne.

She then moved to Park High School and continued to teach her favourite topics, before being promoted to head of English a few months before her retirement in 2002.

Mrs Jackson was also involved with Mid Pennine Arts in the organisation’s early years.

Outside her working life, Mrs Jackson was well-known for her passion at trying to put right inequality and injustice; she was renowned as a quiz queen and enjoyed cruises.

Mike said: “Liz was vivacious, full of energy and very creative.

“She loved to read, read and read some more and enjoyed the theatre. She liked crosswords and Sudoku and had a huge general knowledge.

“She was also good at being a mediator. Whenever somebody had a problem, they would often go to Liz. She was an agony aunt, if you like.

“Liz was absolutely devoted to her daughters and grandson. She was happy when she could baby sit. She saw her grandson at Christmas, but it was a shame she missed his first birthday.”

Mrs Jackson leaves her husband Mike, daughters Laura and Amy and grandson Lucian.

Her funeral will take place at 12-20 p.m. on Monday, April 30th at Skipton Crematorium. Family flowers only, but donations to go to Pendleside Hospice.
