Get active: Car dealership donated pedometers to Nelson primary school

A local car dealership has embraced the chance to help a Nelson primary school to get active by donating 150 pedometers to allow the children to try and "outstep" each other as part of a '˜Healthy Challenge Programme'.

With government studies finding that, in 2016, one in every three Year Six pupils was overweight or obese in the UK, Farnell Nelson Land Rover were keen to arm the kids at Bradley Primary School on Dover Street in the town with the tools to combat factors contributing to a national health crisis by keeping active and avoiding sedentary lifestyles.

As part of the challenge, organised by the school’s P.E. Coach, Peter Connor, classes in each year group will wear the pedometers at school during the course of one week and record their results, going head-to-head to crown the ‘best-steppers’, who will win sports-related prizes.

“It is essential to get involved with community causes, and Bradley Primary School is almost on our doorstep," said Ian Digger, Head of Business at Farnell Land Rover Nelson. “When Peter got in touch to ask if we would like to support the school in its promotion of a healthy lifestyle, we were more than happy to donate the pedometers.

"We hope that the children have fun with the challenge and that others can enjoy them in the future," he added.

With the school also set to use the pedometers to take part in Sports Relief’s ‘The Nation’s Billion Steps’ challenge in March, Peter himself said: “Exercise is so important and we want our children to benefit from the educational aspects of the project, as well as the community side of working with a well-respected business in the area.

"I am relatively new to Bradley Primary and I wanted to create a fun project that the children could really enjoy and actively get involved with," he continued.

Mike Hull, Headteacher at Bradley Primary School added: “We are very fortunate to have enthusiastic pupils who are always up for a challenge, and I am sure this particular contest will encourage some healthy competition.

“Our school motto is ‘Learn to Succeed’ and although this concerns the success of our pupils while at school, it also relates to how we support the progression of our children into contributing members of the community," he added. "This exercise is a great example of that.”
