Online open event for Nelson and Colne College

Nelson and Colne College is gearing up for an online open event this month.

The virtual Year 8, 9 and 10 open event will be held on the college’s purpose-built showcase platform to give prospective students the best opportunity possible to experience college life.

With restrictions still enforced, the college is doing its utmost to keep the community safe with the online event which will take place between 6pm and 8pm on Tuesday April 27th.

It is also open to Year 11 school leavers who want to reconfirm they have made the right choice in choosing the extraordinary with Nelson and Colne College. Registration can be completed on the website at www.nelson.ac.uk.

On the night, attendees can expect an immersive online experience which will include high quality virtual tours of the college campus and facilities and a welcome from Principal Amanda Melton CBE.

A LiveChat feature will also be running where visitors can gain insight from the college’s expert staff on potential options and future career pathways linked to the subject choices students have made at secondary school.

There will be a wide range of course information to explore across the college’s broad range of study options, from A Levels to vocational programmes and apprenticeships to newly-launched T Level qualifications.

Skills demonstrations and Q&A sessions with current star students and tutors will take place, there will be interactive quizzes to take part in, student experience videos to browse, and support will be on hand to help with the application process.

Momina Atique (19) formerly of Pendle Vale College, achieved A*AA in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics at Nelson and Colne College and progressed on to the University of Manchester to study Biomedical Sciences.

Momina said: “I really enjoyed College and I made great progress in my A Levels, developing a better understanding of my subject areas.

“The teachers are always willing to support you whether in your academic subjects or for guidance with future prospects. The Science department has some of the best facilities and laboratories to help you gain practical experience.”

Megan Reeder (18) formerly of Park High School, achieved A* in her Health and Social Care qualification and is now studying Adult Nursing at Edge Hill University.

Megan said: “College is great – I have met lots of different people and have been given the opportunity to develop myself in lessons and through extracurricular activities.

“I have an ambition to become a nurse working in neonatal intensive care. While at college, I was supported to gain a place as a healthcare assistant at the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust which has given me great experience of the NHS.”

Louis Hartley (21) formerly of Colne Primet Academy, recently completed his Engineering Apprenticeship and is employed at KSJ Engineering.

Louis said: “I chose to do my apprenticeship because I preferred the practical side of engineering and to learn this way. I've grown my knowledge and experience throughout my apprenticeship, and I was supported on a regular basis by my trainer assessor.”

Principal Amanda Melton said: “Making the right choice of college is a big decision, and each spring, we encourage young people to come and explore what our extraordinary college has to offer to support future career aspirations from an early stage."
