The war hero, who raised almost £33m for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden, would have turned 101 on April 30th and so after a suggestion by Oakhill Senior School Student Council, youngsters celebrated the inspiration of Capt Sir Tom’s life by holding a non-uniform day to support his charities and made the number 100 as a school family.

A spokesman for the Whalley-based school said: "Whilst we remained in our bubbles and wearing masks, it was lovely to come together following a whole year of separation.

"Different classes have also been remembering Capt Sir Tom with various 100 challenges and we have all celebrated the values of kindness and knowing no matter what age you are, you can always give something to help others."
