This is being done to ensure that customer services staff can focus on dealing with phone inquiries, which have increased, while visits to the contact centre have reduced.

The town hall remains open to deal with inquiries that cannot be dealt with via phone (01282 425011), e-mail or online (www.burnley.gov.uk).

A Burnley Council spokesman said: "We continue to ask residents to use phone, email or online services as much as possible and not to visit the town hall in person unless absolutely necessary, in line with Government guidance on restrictions to non-essential travel."
