As well as warming businesses which have been told to close against continuing to trade, the council has also urged members of the public not to visit companies banned from trading, pointing out that by staying open they are breaking the law.

“Everyone has a duty to comply with the advice provided by the government in relation to COVID-19, in order to protect themselves and others," said Councillor Mohammed Iqbal, Leader of Pendle Council. “Most people and businesses are acting responsibly to try and see the end of the coronavirus outbreak. Unfortunately some are not.”

Having responded to the increasingly-severe coronavirus pandemic, the Government has recently imposed new regulations requiring certain businesses to close until further notice - a decree which is enforceable by law. Businesses found flouting the new law could be given unlimited fines, with further measures possibly also including the revocation of alcohol licenses.

“We all need to do what we can to reduce the spread of the virus so please don’t support those businesses which have ignored the notice to close,” Cllr Iqbal added, with restaurants, cafes, bars, and pubs amongst those businesses told to close, although they are allowed to operated as takeaways provided they are not selling food or drink on the premises.

“We’re working with the police to make sure that these premises remain closed," continued Cllr Iqbal, with cinemas, theatres, spas, museums, clothing, and electrical retailers also closed. These measures will be regularly reviewed over the coming weeks.”
