Spring gardening tips as council green waste collections on way again

Crews will be out emptying green bins from Monday March 1st, helping people to recycle their garden waste.

Last year crews collected an extra 266 tonnes of garden waste for composting, between April and end November, almost 10% more than the previous year.

Carole Taylor, Pendle Council’s Waste and Recycling co-ordinator, said: “New subscribers who are not currently on the scheme can sign up now and get collections from March - which means an extra four months for free.

“Gardening has provided a big boost to people’s health and wellbeing during this very challenging year. The longer days mean that gardeners like me can get out more.

“I think everyone is looking forward to the clocks springing forward an hour on March 28th so we have longer daylight evenings,” she added.

Pendle’s Gardening Services Team have been sharing their tips to get back to gardening as snow and ice melt and temperatures rise to show that spring is on its way.

“Now is the time to put things like twigs and small branches which have come down during wind and snow into your green bin,” said Keith Higson who manages the team.

“Lawns need a light rake to remove any winter debris – so long as the ground is not waterlogged or frozen.

“And this is the time of year to put some fresh compost onto your containers and pots to help growth."
