A CO-OPERATIVE StreetGames young volunteer from Pendle - Arianna Sarchet - met the borough’s MP Andrew Stephenson at an event where she wowed the crowds in the Houses of Parliament.

Arianna (18) has been volunteering with Pendle Leisure Trust’s StreetGames project for four years.

As a Co-operative StreetGames young volunteer, Arianna has developed from a shy person, barely able to talk to young people at her sport sessions, into a confident volunteer able to speak in front of more than 100 people.

Arianna spoke at a reception in the Houses of Parliament about her experiences as a volunteer and how StreetGames has helped her gain experience. Arianna also spoke about her “once in a lifetime” opportunity to volunteer at the London 2012 Olympic Games. She has achieved this through StreetGames’ partnership with Coca-Cola Great Britain.

The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers programme helps 16 to 25-years-olds gain sports qualifications and community leadership skills while volunteering at their local StreetGames project. Arianna has become a qualified gymnastics coach through the programme and has moved on to a paid role within the Pendle Leisure Trust.

Mr Stephenson said: “It was great to meet Arianna at the StreetGames event in Parliament. I was really impressed by her speech and enjoyed giving her a tour of Parliament afterwards.”

Coun. Joe Cooney, from StreetGames, has mentored Arianna. He said: “We’re so pleased Arianna was able to speak at the event and show everyone how far she has come as a volunteer. She is a confident and experienced sports leader who is giving so much back to her community.”
