A happy new year ahead for saved centre

Gannow Community Centre in Adamson Street is now looking ahead to a bright new year after Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Council for Voluntary Service (BPRCVS) teamed up with the Gannow Big local Partnership to keep it open.

The centre, well used by various groups in the community, was set to be closed by Lancashire County Council in its latest round of cost-saving measures.

A spokesman for BPRCVS said: “Through working alongside the Gannow Community Association, ward councillors and the Gannow Big Local Partnership the community centre has been saved from closing.

“The transfer ensures the community centre will remain open and continue to provide essential services, support and activities for the people of Gannow. We have introduced many new groups, services and activities into the community centre.”

The Gannow Big Local Partnership provided £33,500 to pay for refurbishments to the centre including a new kitchen, electrics and security system.

The centre currently provides ladies exercise classes, activities for people with mental health problems, a luncheon club, a snooker club, support services for disadvantaged adults, a youth club, children’s dance classes and a fun night for adults with learning difficulties.

In the near future BPRCVS plans to introduce men’s fitness classes, health clinics and an emergency food bank.

The centre is always looking for new volunteers and activities. Anyone interested can call in and speak with Tracey Noon at the centre every Thursday between 1pm and 4pm.
