A Barrowford mum has shed five stone in nine months - and is now looking forward to a new career.

In July 2015, Carla Murray of Lower Clough Street, weighed more than 18 stone and was recuperating after a slipped disc in her back.

It’s made such a difference to my outlook on life. Mum says I’ve got my sparkle back!

Being housebound for over a week, the then 33-year-old was struggling to find the motivation to even get out of bed in the morning.

Carla said: “I was in a really bad place and just couldn’t shake off the feeling of guilt that I’d allowed myself to get into such a state.

“I was sure that my slipped disc was down to being overweight and the physiotherapy I had to do was such a battle. It was a very dark time in my life.”

Worried friends tried to cheer Carla up but it was her mum telling her that she had “lost her sparkle”, and her closest friend knowing that deeply unhappy Carla was about her weight, who suggested that she might like to join her local Slimming World group.

“It took me two weeks to finally pluck up the courage to walk through the doors of Slimming World,” said Carla, “I had no idea what to expect and thought everyone would stare at me. I was terrified that I’d be the largest person there. However, I needn’t have worried, everyone was so lovely and I was welcomed right from the start. It felt great – people understood and I knew it was the right decision.”

Over the following weeks, Carla learned that, thanks to Slimming World’s Extra Easy plan, she could still eat all her favourite foods just prepared and cooked differently and lost 6.5lb in her first week.

“I couldn’t believe it. I’d eaten spaghetti bolognese, curries, homemade takeaway food and even a pizza. I wasn’t hungry once and had enjoyed cooking for the first time in ages.”

As the weeks went by, Carla made small changes to her normal routine which made huge differences on the scales, spurred on by the support of the other group members.

“Meal times have become a real family affair, with my 10-year old son helping me to prepare meals. This is important to me as I know he is learning about tasty, nutritious food and how to stay fit and healthy. As a family we’ve become more active too.”

Nine months later, Carla has just achieved her five stone award from her consultant Janet Barnes.

“I’m over the moon with that,” she said. “It’s made such a difference to my outlook on life. Mum says I’ve got my sparkle back!”

Carla has done so well on her journey that Slimming World have recruited her to open a new group in Nelson on Monday evenings at 7pm at the cricket club on Surrey Road, launching on April 25th.

“I want to give something back,” added Carla. “I want to help other people to see that they can achieve their own weight loss goals too.”
