Journalist Andrew Spencer, who has been reporting the Pendle news, for more than 40 years, has retired.

Today is his last day as Leader Times Newspapers’ deputy news editor and a leading local reporter. He has also written the popular Mr Pendle column in the newspaper since 1996.

Andrew (58), who lives in Colne, was born in Trawden and attended Trawden County Primary and Colne Grammar Schools and then Nelson and Colne College.

On leaving college, Andrew became a trainee reporter with Leader-Times Newspapers and, over his 41-year career, has covered many of the area’s major news stories as well as being a court reporter and sports reporter. In 1988 he went to Wembley to see Colne Dynamoes FC’s victory.

For much of his career, he was based in the Colne Times office in Colne, which closed in the mid-1990s.

Andrew said: “I have loved every minute of it. I met a lot of very interesting people, but after 41 years it is time for me to retire.

“I have worked with a lot of people who have gone on to bigger things in journalism.”
