Lancashire County Council's flagship initiative to reopen libraries which were closed over a year ago celebrated another milestone as Barrowford Library became the latest to reopen.

Following the closure of 26 of the county's 73 libraries by the council at the end of 2016, a new administration - elected in May 2017 - decided to re-open as many of the establishments as possible, including Barrowford Library on Ann Street, which reopened its doors on Monday, January 22nd.

The eighth library to be reopened after Silverdale, Parbold, Burnley Campus, Bolton-le-Sands, Fulwood, Freckleton, and Oswaldtwistle libraries, Barrowford - reopened by County Councillor Christian Wakeford, who represents the local area - is set to be followed by others in the coming weeks.

"I'm very happy to be reopening Barrowford Library," said County Councillor Wakeford. "People in the village really value their library and have missed it while it has been closed; a library is far more than just a building full of books. It's a community hub that brings people of all ages together."

County Councillor Peter Buckley, cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: "Local libraries are one of the most valued services provided by the county council and perform a vital function, giving people free access to books, information, and the internet for leisure and learning.

"We're committed to reopening libraries and this marks another important step in our programme of reopening libraries across Lancashire," he added. "I look forward to reopening more over the coming weeks."

Lancashire County Council's cabinet has so far made the decision to reopen 13 libraries and agreed to transfer the ownership of a further seven to local organisations which will operate them as independent community-run establishments. The county council is continuing work towards reopening libraries in all of the areas where libraries were closed.
