Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson and his Labour opponent in May’s General Election, Azhar Ali, have put their weight behind the campaign to get new post office facilities back in Barrowford.
Villagers have been left in shock after the sudden clsoure of the Spar shop in Gisburn Road, last week, which housed the village Post Office.
Mr Stephenson has been in correspondence with Richard Hall, senior stakeholder manager with the post office, who says: “The advertisement for the business opportunity at Barrowford is now on the Post Office Ltd website. This is due to expire on March 11th.
“We have already had quite a lot of interest so don’t envisage a problem finding a new operator to provide services in the long term.
“In the short term we are still trying to get the branch reopened with a temporary operator as soon as possible.”
Mr Ali said, following the shock closure and anger in the local community over the lack of information, he and parish councillor Sue Nike had been in discussions with the post office and liquidators of the Spar branch in which it was located.
He said: “I have received confirmation a temporary post office will be opened quickly in the village, in the existing site if possible.
“The Post Office website have now advertised for interested people who would like to open a permanent post Office and already there has been considerable interest.
“Sue and I would like to thank the hundreds of local residents who have returned the ‘Bring back Our Post Office’ campaign petition.”
