Big hearts and big lungs for Burnley 10K

Big hearts and big lungs were the order of the day in the ever popular Burnley 10K race.

Cheered on by enthusiastic spectators on Sunday, the runners pounded the streets of Burnley and raised tens of thousands of pounds for a host of good causes as they made their way around the route, which started and finished in Towneley Park.'‹

First across the finish line was Thomas Cornthwaite who has set the course record for the Burnley 10K route with 32mins 33secs. Nick McCormick took second place in 33mins 09secs with Marc Hartley third in 34mins 57secs.

Pauline Powell was the first woman home in 38mins 18secs and set the female course record for the new Burnley 10K route. She was followed by April Thorpe, who clocked 41mins 36secs for second spot and Sarah Ridehaigh who finished third in 41mins 56secs.

Also across the line was the Mayor of Burnley, Coun. Charlie Briggs, who also helped start the popular road race this morning.

Many of the day’s participants were raising money for a good cause of their own choice, or for one of the event’s partner charities - Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Macmillan Cancer Support, Pendleside Hospice, Burnley Leisure Trust, Every Action Has Consequences and Burnley FC in the Community.

Mandy Rivett, co-ordinator of sponsors, the Asda Foundation, said: “It was fantastic to see so many runners and spectators turn out at today’s Asda Foundation Burnley 10K to help raise thousands of pounds for a number of deserving causes.

“The level of support offered by everyone in Burnley today was a real credit to the people of the town and exactly what makes this event so special.”

Having left Towneley Park, the course took a route along Todmorden Road and then Belvedere Road, in the shadow of Burnley Football Club. It then went into Thompson Park before returning for the grand finish back at Towneley Park.

Tristan Batley-Kyle, Head of Events with race organisers Run For All, said: “It has been a memorable day and huge thanks must go to the many volunteers who gave their time today. This event would not be possible without them.”

The Burnley 10K is supported by title sponsor the Asda Foundation, Aftershockz, Up & Running, Runderwear, Arla Protein, Burnley Express, 2BR, Urbaser, Motorpoint, Hertz, Barnfield Homes, Liberata and Burnley Council.

The race forms part of the hugely popular Asda Foundation 10K Series, which also includes runs in Leeds, York, Hull, Lincoln, Nottingham, Sheffield, Leicester, King’s Lynn and Bury.
