Brierfield man flouted court order to worry his ex

Burnley magistrates heard how Tanveer Akhtar (32) was banned from Bentley Street in Nelson, but drove down it three times, on one occasion pulling up outside Saima Ilyas’s home and driving very slowly past her.

Akhtar had been given a 12 month restraining order, prohibiting him from contacting the victim and entering the street in January, after he was convicted of two counts of battery. He has breached it five times before.

The defendant denied the latest three offences, but was convicted after a trial.

Akhtar, of Chapel Street, Brierfield, was given 12 weeks in jail, suspended for a year, with 40 hours unpaid work . He was ordered to pay a £1,000 criminal courts charge, £620 costs and an £80 victim surcharge. The justices imposed a 12 month restraining order.

The hearing was told Akhtar went onto Bentley Street on May 7th, 11th and 14th. His actions caused the victim distress.
