pendle councillors are being asked to approve a planning application tonight which could lead to a jobs boost for Nelson.

Members of the council’s Nelson Committee were asked to approve the demolition of a former engineering works in Brook Street and replace it with a new production facility for the adjacent Farmhouse Biscuits business.

If approved, it would lead to the creation of 16 new jobs, a report to the meeting from planning officer Keith Thompson says.

Giving his reasons for recommending approval, Mr Thompson said: “The proposed development would greatly improve the visual amenity of the area, provide excellent expansion prospects for the business and, subject to further details being received and acceptable, would be compliant with policy.

“Discussions are ongoing regarding potential flood risk assessment, land contamination, on site parking levels and ventilation systems.

“The proposed development would be acceptable in this location, with the employment benefits and economic growth of this business.”

Mr Thompson said in his report that fears that the building might have become occupied by bats since it became vacant have proved to be unfounded.
