An external gas pipe was fractured causing a gas leak after a car hit a house in Colne this morning.

The incident occurred just before 8-30am in Boundary Street and the occupants of the house and neighbouring properties were evacuated until contractors completed repairs to the pipe.

Police had called for the assistance of the fire service as a result of gas pipe on the outside wall breaking in the collision and two fire engines and crews from Colne responded to the call.

The driver of the car was not trapped and had managed to get out of her vehicle. Firefighters were at the scene less than an hour after ensuring nothing could ignite the gas and start a fire.
