Colne man threatens to blow up house

A COLNE street was taped off by police after a man barricaded himself in his home and threatened to blow it up.

Police were called to Clifford Street at around 3-30 p.m. on Tuesday following a call from a concerned neighbour.

Around forty residents were asked to evacuate their homes while police sealed off the area.

Police say the man had locked himself in is house and turned on the gas taps, threatening to set a match alight.

A special team of trained negotiators were drafted in to speak to the man while gas experts tried to turn off the supply to the street.

Sgt Damian Pemberton said: “Officers were called to Clifford Street following reports that a male had barricaded himself in his house and was threatening to blow it up.

“We believe that he had seen someone earlier in the day, trying to get medication but was refused so responded by making the threats.”

Police cornered off the area for approximately two hours, speaking to the man from outside his home before he let them in.

He was later taken to hospital where he was offered treatment.

Police were able to re-open the road at around 5-30 p.m.
