Colne's civic hall of fame

A truly singular over a century-old photograph this week, only recently unearthed from the late Ebenezer W. Folley's Colne collection.

Here we see in July 1910, a Colne Borough Council outing with the full turnout of councillors of the Edwardian era.

These were men of great substance, many having served on the borough council since its incorporation in November, 1895.

Note, of these 26 civic dignitaries, every single one is seen here wearing head gear of the day and all are sporting either a beard or a trendy moustache.

On the day of this historic picture no less than nine former mayors of Colne are here plus the then current First Citizen.

Coun. Turner Hartley JP (seen on the front row, fifth from the left) was mayor from 1910 - 13 and his palatial home was the imposing “Teneriffe” on Skipton Road, Foulridge, which is today the home of our well-known local entrepreneur Phil McIvor and family.

Other mayors of fame-to-be seen here are Alderman Robinson Foulds JP, mayor for 1899-1901, Alderman Edward Carr JP, mayor in 1905-08 and 1916 -19, Coun. Rennie Knight J.P, our mayor 1913-16 and Alderman James White JP, mayor 1919-21, all in Colne’s civic hall of fame.
