Pendle Council has sent its sincere apologies to two families after a coffin was found to have been buried in the wrong plot in Colne Cemetery at a funeral on Thursday.

According to Pendle Council, the mix-up occurred because, unusually, two burial ceremonies took place within a short space of time on adjoining plots.

The council said measures were being put in place to ensure the situation does not happen again.

“This has been very distressing for the families and upsetting for staff.

“We have offered a sincere apology to the families and the mistake we made has been sorted out,” said Deputy Chief Executive Philip Mousdale.
