Arrests after serious crash in Burnley town centre

Two men have been arrested after a collision in Burnley town centre in the early hours of this morning.

The incident occurred at around 4-50am and involved a Vauxhall Corsa car and a 22-year -old man from Barnoldswick as he was walking down Hammerton Street close to Lava and Ignite.

As a result of the collision, the man has ended up becoming trapped underneath the vehicle and a group of people have tried to free him by turning the vehicle on its roof.

He has been taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he is currently in a stable condition. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of the Corsa, an 18-year-old man from Burnley has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving while a 19-year-old passenger also from Burnley was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a ball bearing firing imitation rifle which was found in the vehicle.

Part of Hammerton Street remains closed whilst officers investigate. It should be reopened again soon.
