Burnley mill burglar left trail of blood at premises

A Burnley mill burglar was questioned when he was in jail after he had left a trail of blood at the premises, a court heard.

Mark Butterworth had smashed a window at the front of John Spencer Textiles, setting off the alarm, around midnight. He had owned up to what he had done when police found the blood was his and went to speak to him in prison in Cumbria.

The defendant had been asked to go to the police station, but refused, admitted the break-in and signed an officer's notebook. Butterworth had caused damage totalling £250, but left empty- handed, Burnley magistrates were told.

Butterworth was released from custody last Friday, after serving a 36-week sentence for burglary and is now on licence.

The defendant, of Elgin Crescent, Burnley, has now been ordered to pay £250 compensation, after admitting burglary with intent to steal, last November 24.

Mr Mark Williams, defending, told the hearing Butterworth made full admissions to the police.

The solicitor added: "Nothing was taken. Some damage was caused. He accepts that. He accepts responsibility for causing it."
