Police are appealing for information after a man suffered a broken leg in an assault in Nelson.

The incident occurred at around 5-40am on Saturday when the 38-year-old victim was sitting on a bench near to the pond in Victoria Park in Carr Road.

The man was approached by a couple who asked to borrow his phone. The pair walked off before returning a short time later. They kicked and punched the victim and then ran off with his phone.

As well as a broken leg, police said the victim also sustained a chipped tooth in the attack. The offenders are described as a man and woman, both Asian, aged in their twenties and were dressed in dark clothing.

DC Shazia Sadiq of East CID said: “This attack has left the victim with some nasty injuries and I would urge anyone who has any information about what happened to contact us. If anyone saw a couple matching the description given in the area around the time of the attack I would urge them to get in touch.”
