Police are appealing for witnesses after two men fled the scene of a crash in Nelson on Saturday night.

The men were in a white 05-registered Peugeot Partner van at the time of the accident at approximately 10-35pm when the vehicle struck a lamppost and caused a gas main to rupture in Hibson Road.

Police say the van also hit a grey Volkswagen Golf and another car after striking the lamppost.

Hibson Road was closed until the early hours of Sunday morning between its junctions with Halifax Road and Lomeshaye Road while repairs were carried out to the gas main and the road was cleared.

The men ran off on to Romney Street and Percy Street according to the police. One was wearing a stripy top and had a sandy coloured dog with him.
