A Nelson dad lost his temper and hit his former partner when he was angered by “provocative” comments she had made, a court heard.

Burnley magistrates were told how Reece Bottomley (21) was also verbally abusive to the victim, who he had been in a three year “on and off” relationship with.

The pair were said to have been arguing after the defendant had arranged to meet her to collect his bank card from her property.

The ex-marquee erector was said to be immediately remorseful for the violence and sent the victim a message of apology.

Bottomley, of Smith Street, Nelson, admitted assault by beating, on May 5th.

The defendant was given a 12 month community order, with 40 hours unpaid work and a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

He must pay £85 costs, an £85 victim surcharge and £50 compensation.

David Leach (defending) said Bottomley had shown genuine remorse.

The court heard that Bottomley had no similar convictions as an adult.
