A delighted Barnoldswick woman is now pouring over paint charts after winning a Leader Times Newspaper competition.

Helen Wright (53), of Blakeley Crescent, Barnoldswick, will benefit from a free decorating job courtesy of Anthony Allen from Colne based company Shades Painters and Decorators.

In February, Leader Times Newspapers put it to the public to choose on three worthy causes and Mrs Wright, the nominee in story two, brushed aside the other entries and secured more than half of the votes cast.

The mum-of-three, who helps with the Bosom Friends cancer support group, was diagnosed with incurable breast cancer in 2014, nine years after successfully beating the same cancer.

Her daughter Samantha entered her into the competition and Mrs Wright admits she is both happy and stunned to win and is planning to have her front room brightened up.

Mrs Wright said: “I didn’t know anything about it. I even read it in the paper and I still didn’t realise.

“It was only when Samantha rang me and told me ‘I’ve entered you into a competition and you’re in the final three’ I knew.

“We’ve been umming and ahing for a couple of years about having it decorated. I’m so pleased. The colour will be my choice though!

“I think the only thing I’ve ever won is half a pound of butter at a dog show years ago.”

Mrs Wright also took the time to thank husband Glen and her children Mikayla, Samantha and Jason for their continued support.

She said: “My family has been amazing, really supportive. I just try keep going and get out as much as I can. The work the Bosom Friends do for people is fantastic.”

And Mr Allen said: “I’m really happy. The number of people who have seen the story and said to me ‘what a great idea’ has made it worthwhile. I just want to get cracking now.”
