Teams from Burnley and Pendle were tasked to work against the clock to design, cost and manufacture a mini Formula One racing car before their vehicles were tested in time trials on a specially-constructed track at the end of the day.

As part of the day of high-octane, engineering-focussed activities, teams of four had to allocate individual job roles and then work as a group to give a final presentation to a panel of industry expert judges who are all trainers at Themis, the apprenticeship and business training arm of Burnley College.

As part of the production process, selected students were given the opportunity to make use of the high-tech, industry-standard equipment within the Centre of Engineering Excellence at Burnley College with supervision to make fine adjustments to increase the aerodynamics of their cars.

In a nail-biting time trial, the fastest car on the day was produced by Marsden Heights Community College.

The team from West Craven High School was awarded the Enjoy-neering Trophy for the best overall performance on the day, with the judges commending their great teamwork and factoring sustainable materials into their design.

Head of Engineering at Themis Neil Burrows said: "Enjoy-neering was a great opportunity for secondary school pupils to discover more about engineering - and have a great time, too. The final contest to find the fastest car went down to the wire and showed what innovation and skill had gone into creating the racing cars.

"We hope that the pupils who took part in Enjoy-neering have gained an insight into the amazing opportunities available to them as engineers of the future and have seen how their career can start via a Themis apprenticeship."
