A Nelson student is celebrating after becoming the first to achieve the top grade in Retail Management at Blackburn College’s University Centre.
Tawassal Hussain (33), of Every Street, has graduated with a First Class Honours BA (Hons) Retail Management degree and was one of 600 to graduate this autumn..
He said: “My family are really proud and I’m also quite overwhelmed about getting a First Class Honours - especially as it is the first First Class Honours achieved in Retail Management at University Centre at Blackburn College.
“I decided to study at Blackburn College because I live in Nelson and it was local to me. However, the course itself was also a major attraction, as there aren’t many courses in Retail Management around.”
Tawassal previously studied a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development qualification at University Centre at Blackburn College at a lower level and had to balance working full-time to complete
Tawassal added: “I’ve worked full-time during the degree at Daisy Communications - it was quite a balancing act but I had great support from my family and my manager at Daisy Communications as well as the lecturers at UCBC.
“The tutors were very understanding of the fact that many people in the group were working.
“I’m hoping to progress within my career and I’ve gained lots of skills and experience.”
Tawassal did a dissertation about the barriers faced by women at work. He carried out interviews with managers, as well as questionnaires and surveys, and says he found doing the project really opened his eyes.
He added: “It’s been a hectic time as I got married last year so it’s good to see that I managed to get the balance right between studying and my home life.”
