Bosses at Barnoldswick Medical Centre have apologised after a data breach led to almost 500 patient email addresses being circulated on a survey.
News first emerged of the breach when medical centre users took to Facebook on Wednesday last week and reported seeing their email address alongside “hundreds” of other recipients.
A spokesman for the Park Road surgery confirmed that the number of email addresses circulated in error was close to 500 and those email addresses belong to patients who have provided their email address, at registration or otherwise, and consented to it being used for correspondence purposes.
Sara Richardson, Practice Manager at Barnoldswick Medical Centre, said: “We would like to apologise to our patients for any distress caused. Barnoldswick Medical Centre takes patient confidentiality very seriously.
“We would like to reassure patients that the matter has been reported to NHS England and we have implemented measures to prevent this happening again.
“Any patients who have questions or concerns should contact the surgery directly.”
