Patients and visitors to hospitals in Burnley, Pendle, Clitheroe and Blackburn should check their change for a special Royal Mint 10 pence coin.

Five hospitals in East Lancashire will be releasing a limited number of special NHS design 10p coins tomorrow at their restaurants to mark 70 years since the start of the NHS.

East Lancashire Hospitals is the only NHS Trust in the north west to be selected for this special scheme by the Royal Mint as part of its Great British Coin Hunt.

To get your hands on one of the special 10p coins, visitors should check their change when they make a cash purchase in the restaurants at Royal Blackburn, Burnley General and community hospitals at Clitheroe, Accrington Victoria and Pendle.

Kevin McGee, chief executive of East Lancashire Hospitals, said: “ELHT has a proud heritage and is known throughout the world for pioneering new and innovative techniques and treatments, so we’re delighted to have been chosen as one of only nine NHS organisations to participate in The Great British Coin Hunt. We look forward to playing a part in these special ‘NHS’ 10p coins making their way across East Lancashire and beyond.”

Anne Jessopp, chief executive of The Royal Mint, said: “The ‘N’ for NHS has proved a very popular choice with the public as a Great British Coin Hunt 10p theme. The NHS is a well-respected national institution – most Britons will come into contact with it at some time in their lives, so it was a natural choice.”

Additional coins launched as part of a whole alphabet of special 10p pieces celebrating national institutions include a double decker bus (D), King Arthur (K), queuing (Q) and of course a tea pot (T). Alternatively you can buy the coins direct from The Royal Mint.

If you find one of the special ‘NHS’ 10p coins please take a photo of you with the coin and share it with East Lancashire Hospitals on its Facebook or Twitter pages using the hashtag #ifoundone
