With the summer having passed us by, that desire to tone up and sculpt the perfect physique may have diminished somewhat.
Generally, as winter creeps in to the equation, many of us will struggle to conjure the motivation to train or to challenge ourselves.
But fitness shouldn’t just revolve around three months of the year. It should be something you want to do consistently and, more importantly, it should be something that you enjoy.
That’s where FLS Fitness comes in. The newly constructed hub in Burnley marries the concepts of fun and fitness and provides that inspirational platform for clients to strive for success.
While some personal training facilities can take quite a regimental stance, staff at FLS focus on getting results while providing a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for you to work in.
And they cater for everybody - regardless of experience, levels of fitness or ultimate goal. They’re on hand to get you fitter, leaner and stronger (FLS) via an eclectic collection of training methods.
The eight week metabolic challenge is the brain child of trainers Jackjon Butcher and Anthony Tibbs. Now on its fifth round, the challenge includes a fitness test at the start and end of the programme for comparison purposes while clients can enjoy two classes a week of their choice.
The schedule includes HIIT circuits, abdominal routines, CrossFit type workouts, combat, bootcamp, upper body workouts, strongman classes and much more. It’s group fitness with a refreshing, enjoyable and rewarding twist.
“One thing we didn’t want to do was build on a traditional gym model,” said Jackjon. “We want to do small group training with alternative training methods to create something different for the company. We have bespoke style classes - we’re offering something different and unique which will get you fit, strong but brings enjoyment to getting fit and healthy. We don’t stick to any specific training methodology. We don’t want to associate ourselves to one particular brand. We like to have that diversity while remaining results driven for our clients. We’re inclusive of a variety of training styles. If we think it will benefit the individual then we’ll deliver it.
“One of the big things is that we’re really social. We always have a laugh with everybody that comes down and everybody gels and gets on. They have a good workout but they have a laugh with it. We try and bring all concepts of fitness together so there’s something for everyone - hence the name FLS (Fitter, Leaner, Stronger). We offer something cardio based such as our combat style training, we cater for strength in our strongman type training and everything is pretty tough so when you put it all together you’re going to get leaner. We try and hit all angles.”
Anthony added: “The eight week challenge starts off with fitness testing and then over the eight weeks the challenge is to get fitter, leaner and stronger. We then have another fitness test at the end. We’ll celebrate and congratulate the fittest person but we’re also looking for the most improved. Over the eight weeks you participate in our timetable and then we’ll celebrate everything at our social.
“Throughout the eight weeks you get two classes from our programme per week. Additional classes can be added on as well. You can pinpoint your weaknesses in the fitness test and then pinpoint the classes that will help you improve. It’s not just about fitness, it’s about body composition too and getting that full package.
“They’ve got bigger and better every time. We’ve got our own facility now so we can offer our clients a lot more. We’ve noticed big improvements every time. If we didn’t get the results then people wouldn’t stick with us.”
After having my height, weight and body fat percentage measured, I thought I’d give the fitness test a go. And awaiting me were sledgehammer swings, knee to stand slams, press ups, kettlebell swings, AST rows, squat jumps, box jumps, a keg carry, burpees, shuttle runs, lateral cone taps, a time trial sprint and an endurance plank.
