An inquest has been opened into the death of Nelson fire victim Bryan May.

The body of Mr May (41) was discovered by firefighters at the bottom of the stairs of his home in Princess Street in the early hours of Saturday.

A subsequent ongoing police investigation has found the fire appears to have been non-accidental, but officers have ruled out third-party involvement.

Mr May was identified following finger and palm print analysis.

Pathologist Dr Richard Prescott carried out a post-mortem examination but has requested toxicological tests before giving a cause of death.

Two fire engines from Nelson arrived at the scene at 1-15am when they found a mid-terraced property on fire with smoke spreading to one of the houses next door.

Four teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house with hose reels.

East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor adjourned the inquest until June 30th.
