A PENDLE schoolgirl who is aiming to compete in the Olympic Games in London next year enhanced her chances by lifting a British title at the weekend.
Aneila Afsar, of Barkerhouse Road, Nelson, was crowned as the under 49kg taekwondo champion after winning a competition held in Manchester.
Aneila (13), a Year 8 pupil at Pendle Vale College, Nelson, is already a black belt in the sport, having practised it since she was six, and is coached by Philip Richardson at the Jakumbal Club in Marsden Hall Road.
Her mother, Jannat Afsar, said: “We are all very proud of her. She has worked really hard over the last six months and we are travelling 200 miles a week for competitions and training.”
Her progress in the sport has led to her school sponsoring her efforts and Aneila also trained with Jason Mayoh, a member of the British Olympic team, in the run up to the weekend’s competition, which saw her win three bouts to lift the title.
