A 60-year-old man who walked into Nelson police station and confessed he had 3.15g of crack cocaine could be facing jail.

John Allum, of Dover Street, Nelson, admitted possessing the Class A drugs, with intent to supply, last November 11th.

His solicitor told Burnley magistrates Allum’s last conviction was 15 years ago.

He also told the court there were no relevant offences on his record and the circumstances of the case were extremely unusual.

Nick Dearing told the hearing a judge might not send the defendant to prison.

He continued: “There are substantial mitigating features. He is not a generic street dealer.”

Allum was committed on unconditional bail to be sentenced at Burnley Crown Court on March 21th.
