A refuse worker was airlifted to hospital after his hand became trapped in a bin wagon.

A fire and rescue from Nelson were called to St George’s Road in the town at 1pm yesterday to free the man’s hand.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Serive said: “We received a call that a man had got his hand trapped in refuse wagon.

“We used a high pressure air bag to release his right hand and he was then airlifted to hospital with crush injuries to his fingers.”
