Colne Carnival Queens of the 1950s and 1960s

At my latest lecture at Colne Library (the brave Colne men of the Great War) I had a most fortuitous meet up with local couple Clive and Lillian Collins.

Clive, who was for many years press and publicity secretary for the original Colne Charities Carnival, most kindly presented to me for my “Old Colne archive” a superb array of photos from those wonderful years of the 1950s and 60s Colne Carnival.

The amicable pair recalled those early years with great fondness and here in this week’s picture, taken during the hot summer of 1959, we see our Colne Carnival Queen Jacqueline Snowden complete with her feline friend, a magnificent African leopard.

Jacqueline was a true Colne beauty of the day, as was in another excellent carnival scene the stunning Joan Hodson, our carnival queen in 1958.

There also are photos of bonnie Colners Tris Aunger and Marjorie Heap, our carnival queens in 1960 and 1961.

Rest assured more of these evocative quantum-leap pictures will be featuring in this column soon.
