‘Pendle Witches - The Musical’ takes to stage

“Pendle Witches – The Musical” will chart the story of members of the Demdike and Chattox families who were hanged for witchcraft in 1612 and is based on the witches’ confessions from the original trial.

The play has been written and directed by Blackburn College’s Head of Performing Arts Nick Maynard and Director of Music Michael Greenhalgh, and features both teachers and students from the college.

Nick Maynard said: “The Pendle Witches is such a great of story of murder, witchcraft and revenge – it’s the perfect tale to brought to the stage! We’ve even infused the musical with a bitter-sweet love story to add even more life.

“The Pendle Witch trials were the most famous in England, in which they made extraordinary accounts of their own activities incriminating each other. Had they remained silent there would very probably have been no trial and no executions! Our college musical has proved to be a popular evening’s entertainment every year and this one is going to be no exception.”

One of the young actresses is Tasha Brittain, who plays the part of Elizabeth Southern, known as Old Demdike.

Tasha said: “I’ve always loved acting, so I was so pleased to be cast in one of the main roles as Old Demdike – she really is a great character to play. I’ve enjoyed every minute of the musical and would recommend anybody wanting a good night out to come and watch us.”

The play opens on Tuesday, with further performances on Thursday and Friday at 7-30 p.m. at Blackburn College’s Feilden Street Theatre.
