Clarets legend Trevor Meredith celebrates his 'match made in Heaven' with Diamond Wedding anniversary

Winger Trevor wrote himself into the Turf Moor history books on May 2nd, 1960, when he scored the winning goal to beat Manchester City at Maine Road and clinch Burnley's second league title and immortality.

But today, the old school gentleman is celebrating another, more important, date in his life, his marriage 60 years ago at King Street Church in Haslingden to Eileen.

Speaking to the Burnley Express from their home in Leyland, Trevor reflected on what you might call a "lucky break" as he first met Eileen, a nurse at Burnley's Victoria Hospital, where he was recuperating from a broken ankle in 1959.

"I'd broken my ankle playing for the reserves and so was laid up the hospital where Eileen was a nurse. You could say it was a lucky break. We got together a few weeks later and things developed from there.

"Eileen was from Haslingden and so we married there. I was living in digs in Burnley at first but we moved to Reynolds Street in the town when we got married."

Trevor and Eileen went on to be the proud parents of Julie and Tracey, and now also have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lockdown has meant their Diamond Wedding anniversary celebrations have been limited to garden visits from their family at home in Leyland, but they were treated to a lovely poem written and read by Julie, as well as cake, baked by their granddaughter's friend.

Trevor (84) added: "The poem made us all a bit weepy but it was lovely. We normally go out for a family meal for our anniversary, but we'll have to put this back a couple of months.

"I think the secret to our long marriage is companionship, and the fact we share a lot of interests and we've been blessed with a wonderful family."

Those shared interests include walking their dogs, particularly in the Lake District in their younger years. The happy couple who celebrated their honeymoon in Devon, also enjoyed holidays to the Italian Lakes and dancing at the former Astoria Ballroom in Rawtenstall.

Trevor was transferred to Shrewsbury Town in 1964 and later re-trained as a primary school teacher which he worked as for 25 years in the Preston area.

The popular Clarets figure has been back to Turf Moor several times in recent years and said he was delighted that Burnley were still "punching above their weight".

Trevor, who still tries to keep in touch with former team-mates John Angus and Jimmy Robson from his playing days, said he had no regrets.

"I have lots of happy memories from my time at Burnley, but obviously scoring the winning goal that clinched us the title was just wonderful. The club had a real family atmosphere then. I wouldn't swap it for playing today, even for the money, I have no regrets."
