Letter of thanks from Manchester United boss for Burnley boy (seven) who raised almost £1,000 towards food for hungry children

Seven-year-old Alfie, who raised £900 towards food for vulnerable families, was thrilled to receive the letter from Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær thanking him for his 'amazing efforts.'

The letter went on to say that everyone at the club was 'in awe' of Alfie's amazing achievement to help others and Ole said he wanted to extend his 'thanks and gratitude' to the Burnley youngster.

A Clarets fan, Alfie, who also received a commendation letter from Burnley Football Club, asked if he could do something to help after hearing that some children did not have a lot of food as the pandemic hit.

So his family came up with the idea of walking the equivalent of a marathon to raise cash to buy stock for foodbanks.

Setting out on daily walks with his mum and dad, Lauren Hughes and Jonathon Smith, Alfie managed to clock up an average three miles a day around his home in Brunshaw and soon smashed his £150 target.

Once the challenge was completed the family went on a shopping spree at Morrisons in Todmorden and most of the food they bought fillled up the store's cafe!

And five organisations have benefitted from a mixture of cash and food donations from Alfie and these are: St Matthew's and St Stephen's churches in Burnley, Charter House Resource Centre in Morse Street, Burnley, Burnley Community Kitchen and Todmorden Foodbank.

Lauren said: "Staff at the Morrisons store were absolutely fantastic with us.

"We are very proud of Alfie and his amazing achievement."
