Storm Ciara hit Padiham pub opens for first time in almost a month after devastating flood

A popular town centre watering hole, that was among the worst affected after Storm Ciara hit Padiham, has opened for the first time in almost a month.

The Flying Dutchman suffered extensive damage and flooding during Storm Ciara last month.

And while the main body of the pub was protected from flooding the cellar and all the equipment in it was destroyed when the water hit it 'like a waterfall.'

Electricity was off at the pub for four days as landlord Anthony Woan began the mammoth clean up operation which included sanitising the cellar and replacing all the equipment.

He opened the doors for the first time in three and a half weeks on Saturday evening to welcome regulars back.

Anthony, who only took over the reins last year, praised Burnley Council for providing skips for rubbish from the floods and also assisting businesses with applying for grants to help with the financial losses that could run into thousands of pounds.

He also said that Thwaites Brewery had been a 'great help' with various expenses and installation of new equipment.

Several shops in the town centre were hit by flood water as Storm Ciara raged and the River Calder rose to its highest levels since the devastating floods on Boxing Day, 2015.
