Police say the boys, aged between eight and ten years old, lit some cardboard near a car that was being parked by a woman in Nelson. The owner parked her car not realising there was a small fire. The incident happened at the rear of Carr Road at around 12-10pm yesterday (Monday).

PC 5731 Louise Hayden, of Lancashire Police, said: "The fire was started by mainly cardboard - it then spread under the vehicle and set the tyres on fire. As the tyres took hold, the fire spread further, burning the whole vehicle out and bursting the fuel tank. Nelson Fire Service were called out and found the fuel running down the back street towards other parked vehicles. "They worked hard in keeping the fire away from the cars and adjacent buildings.

In a separate incident last week where youths were involved, she said: "Similarly, a fire had been started in the last week just off the footpath which leads up 'Gib Hill' land from the top of Gibfield Road, in Colne. Again, we suspect young people may be involved. If you have any information, please contact PC Matt Lunney by e-mail: [email protected]
